SMART Goals…Boston Style

SMART Goals…Boston Style

Most of us are probably familiar with SMART Goals. However, if you haven't heard of it, here's a quick overview.

S = Specific (Clearly state what you will do, use action items)

M = Measurable (Provide a way to evaluate, and use metrics or data points)

A = Achievable (Within your scope, possible to accomplish)

R = Relevant (Makes sense within the scope, improves the business in some way)

T = Time-Bound (Specify when you will be done, be specific on the date or timeframe)

This method serves as an excellent guideline. For instance, instead of saying, "I want my business to make a lot of money," set a goal of "Achieving $10,000 in monthly revenue." The SMART method is great for short-term goals, such as monthly or quarterly targets.

However, I'm from Boston, and we can be brash, confident, and distinctive, especially when it comes to our sports teams. But many of us from Boston also have a unique way of looking at things and, of course, our unmistakable Boston accent where 'R' sounds more like 'AH.'

For long-term goals, we use the Boston method – SMAHT. So, the SMA and T remain the same.

I don't want my long-term goals to be merely relevant or sensible. I want them to be audacious. I want them to be seemingly out of reach... I want them to be HUGE!

Make those goals HUGE. I want you to break a sweat pursuing your yearly goals. I want you to reach far. And I want to see a HUGE smile on your face WHEN you achieve that annual goal.

Remember to keep your SMAHT goal in mind and work towards it every day. To stay accountable, I have a calendar next to my desk. Each day, I list the most important task that brings me closer to my SMAHT goal.

If I achieve the goal, I mark it with a green checkmark. If I don't meet the goal, I mark it with a red X. It's a visual reminder that reaching a goal requires focusing on one day at a time and breaking it into smaller milestones.

If you need a system for planning, I've created one from scratch. I call it my Start At Results Planning System. Both I and my clients use this system, and the best part is that it's FREE. You won't regret using it! Just click on this link to get started.
