How to Make Lasting Online Connections

February 05, 20254 min read

It’s no secret that the business world is shifting rapidly from face-to-face interactions to online communication. Because of this, businesses must maintain strong digital outreach strategies to network, prospect, and stay connected with their contacts. However, navigating the endless tools available can feel overwhelming.

To help, we’re sharing key strategies to improve your online communication and build meaningful connections.

Finding New Connections: LinkedIn & Cold Email

LinkedIn

When it comes to networking, I’ve found that LinkedIn is more effective than cold emailing. With the right LinkedIn tools, you can connect with leads based on location, job title, and industry—getting in front of the right people faster. Plus, LinkedIn makes it easy for both parties to learn about each other just by viewing a profile.

In cold outreach, I prefer starting a conversation rather than jumping straight into selling my services. Let’s be real—no one enjoys logging into LinkedIn only to see a direct message from someone pushing their product. That’s not what LinkedIn was designed for. Instead, the platform was created to foster discussions among professionals and connect like-minded people who might not have otherwise crossed paths.

Beyond direct messaging, posting on LinkedIn can help supplement your outreach efforts. Sharing blog posts, industry insights, or relevant news helps establish you as an expert in your field. The more valuable content you provide, the more trust you build—and when people trust you, they’re more likely to explore your services.

Cold Emailing

While LinkedIn is great for networking, cold emailing still has its place. However, the key to success is keeping your emails short, direct, and engaging—without sounding spammy.

A mistake I made early on was cramming too much information into one email, trying to highlight every possible benefit of my services. The reality? No one cares that much about you in a cold email (yet). You have maybe 10 seconds to grab their attention, so your message needs to be concise and focused on their needs, not just yours.

Your call-to-action (CTA) should also be something that benefits the recipient, rather than simply asking for a sales call. Give them a reason to click on your link—whether it’s offering a helpful resource, a relevant insight, or an opportunity to connect.

Engaging with Your Existing Connections

If you already have an email list or LinkedIn connections, it’s important to nurture these relationships—whether they’re prospects or past clients. You never know when a connection might turn into an opportunity.

However, one-size-fits-all messaging doesn’t work. A prospect and a past client have different interests and needs. That’s why segmenting your audience is crucial. By organizing your contacts into groups, you can tailor your messaging to increase engagement and response rates.

Avoid the Spam Trap

Whether you’re reaching out via email or LinkedIn, make sure your message doesn’t come across as spammy. If it feels like a generic sales pitch, it will likely go unread—or worse, land in a spam or promotions folder.

To prevent this:
✅ Use a personal tone and reference details relevant to the recipient.
✅ Avoid overused buzzwords like “limited-time offer” or excessive exclamation points.
✅ Keep your message conversational and value-driven rather than promotional.

Your goal should be to start a conversation, not blast out an ad that gets ignored.

Following Up Without Being Pushy

If your initial message doesn’t get a response, don’t give up. People are busy, and sometimes they just miss your first message. A well-crafted follow-up—offering a new insight or asking a thoughtful question—can spark engagement. The key is to provide additional value rather than just repeating your previous message.

Final Takeaways

We’ve covered a lot, but here are the main points to remember:

  • Be concise and provide immediate value in your outreach.

  • Segment your contacts to ensure they receive relevant information.

  • Maintain consistency across all your communications to reinforce your brand message.

Yes, building meaningful online connections takes time and effort. But the good news? You don’t have to do it alone.
