Are You Stuck in Constant Firefighter Mode?

April 04, 20222 min read

As a business owner, you're no stranger to this question. The demands and stresses of running a business can pile up, and despite your best efforts to plan your day, unexpected issues can quickly throw you back into firefighting mode.

This is a common theme I hear from my clients, and I empathize. However, it's essential to remember one critical thing.

Firefighters aren't battling blazes constantly throughout the day. Most of their time is spent at the firehouse or engaged in training. They respond to calls when necessary, which may include extinguishing fires, but they don't spend every moment on fire duty.

My point is this: if you're constantly spending all your hours putting out fires in your business, there is an issue. Such a relentless pace is unsustainable and will eventually lead to burnout (a fitting choice of words, wouldn't you agree).

How about taking a cue from Smokey the Bear and focusing on fire prevention? (I promise, no more fire analogies)

Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • What areas of my business are consistently in reactionary mode?

  • What are the typical steps that lead to these fires?

  • Are there any existing processes that aren't working?

  • Are there communication breakdowns?

  • Is the right person in the right role?

These five questions are likely to reveal valuable insights, many of which may be related to your current systems or lack thereof.

I'm willing to bet that clients play a part too. You might need to explore ways to put your clients in a better position as well.

Begin by tackling one fire area at a time. I have a feeling you'll discover more than one. Focus on resolving one issue entirely before moving on to the next. The key here is to address problems before they escalate.

So instead of wielding an axe, pick up a clipboard and map out your solutions!

And remember, only YOU can prevent business "fires." (I just had to say that!)
