My name is Dennis Riley. I am the founder and owner of Goals To Results. I have been helping small business owners with business and data strategy for over 30 years.
Are you a business owner that is used to wearing different hats? So am I. But over the years I learned you cannot be the only one in charge of wearing all the hats in your business. You need others people or systems to help you. The sooner you realize this, the better off you will be!
I love being a small business owner. It is very rewarding but it is also very challenging. Maybe, that’s why I love it because I love the challenge. I am also a problem solver. To me, every problem has a solution. The key is to think outside the box. I find it best when you have no pre-conceived notion when facing a problem. If you don’t have a solution, then everything is a possible solution.
I am a data geek. The great thing about data is most of the time it does not lie. The problems usually come from assuming what the data is saying. You can pretty much take any piece of data and make it sound like something you want it to sound like. This is where an owner can run into major problems. I'd rather deal with finding a solution to the bad data story than determining my business direction based on incomplete data. I love the ah-ha moments when I show my clients their custom data dashboards. To see all their KPIs in one place really tells the story of their business. Then we map out a strategy to reach their goals. We do this by implementing systems to keep track of the data and to improve it.
If my client doesn’t have a success story, then I don’t have one. I succeed only when my client succeeds. That is what keeps me going.
I believe more than ever that every small business owner needs to know their data and what events affect the data.
I started my first company, Softmedia in 1994. I worked with business owners to create custom software applications to improved different parts of their business. Whether it was a billing package, a customer service application, a lead system or even a management tool, we provided top notch applications with equally top notch services. But it became quickly apparent that I needed to know more about the company than just the software project of my clients. The strategy was extremely helpful to all the projects.
Expanding each project to include business strategy and data strategy worked extremely well and Softmedia grew in size due to the people and the results. I started to realize that this system of releasing software did not have to be confined to technical applications. I worked with existing clients to implement other business strategies.
I created another company called Alore Group in 2011. This company would oversee all different projects whether technical or non-technical. The technical projects were still handled by Softmedia. Alore Group would eventually become Goals To Results. And the name says it all. My goal is to get results for my clients whether it is in business strategy, data strategy, systems or creating data dashboards for our clients.
It was not always smooth sailing in my past 29 plus years in being a business owner. But with perseverance and determination, the journey still continues and our clients are the ones who benefit the most. With experience comes the knowledge of what works and doesn’t work. The road to success is filled with battle scars. The lessons learned from these scars are shared so that maybe our client’s scars run less deep. And my clients have a person on their team that can make their ride a little more smoother.
