Is this just a puzzle, or is it something else?
You’ve seen this picture on the internet. How many triangles are there in this puzzle? You’ve seen it probably plenty of times. Now, how do you go about solving this? Is there a solution?
Yes, there is a solution. I’ll show you in a minute the exact number of triangles in this puzzle, but question I have for you is, how do you go about it? Do you just take that puzzle and just start counting wherever your eyes can see, or do you have a mathematical solution to every problem? Yes, there is a mathematical solution to these problems on the internet somewhere. Google it. You will find it, or do you have a systematic approach to doing this?
I want talk about the systematic approach. What if we used a system to solve this problem? How many triangles do you see? We’re going to count the number of triangles from a given row, but we’re going to start at the top here. We’re going to work our way down. We’re going to do it twice. One time through, we’re going to go with the triangles pointing up, and the next time through, we’re going to go with triangles pointing down. We are starting at the top and systematically working our way down.
The top-down approach used to solve this problem can be used to achieve many different goals. This system is called Start at results. You start with the goal in mind. What is the result you are trying to achieve? What does it look like? How will you know when you get there? From that point, you can work your way backwards. This is also called Reverse Engineering. This systematic approach can be used to solve many, many of your business goals.
